Writing Coaching & Consulting for Rabbis

Support for Rabbis at Every Stage of Sermon Writing and in Every Aspect of Writing and Publishing Essays, Articles, and Books

With over a decade of success as a professional editor of poetry and prose, combined with years of high-level experience in Jewish education and text study, I offer one-on-one coaching for rabbis in every area of professional writing.

Our time together won’t be one-size-fits-all, but will be tailored to your strengths and your needs, and could include:

  • Support with sermon writing, from the earliest brainstorming stages and the anxiety of the blank page, to the final editing that can express your Torah with depth and power.
  • Turning your ideas into publishable op-eds, essays, and books.
  • Submitting your work to publications, identifying publishers, and crafting compelling book proposals.

Let’s connect to see if we might be a good fit! I’m here to answer your questions, and create a plan that can best meet your needs.

Looking for Support With Your High Holiday or Regular Sermon Writing?

I’ve coached rabbis and rabbinical students at all stages of their careers, helping them craft Divrei Torah that offer transformative wisdom and express their authentic voices. I would be grateful to work as your rabbinic writing coach, whether you are looking for accountability in your writing, a developmental partner to help brainstorm and organize your thoughts, feedback to refine your drafts, or just a way to turn your writing process from anxious and overwhelming to energizing and empowering.

Having studied at institutions like Yeshivat Hadar, and taught classes for the Drisha Institute, Yetzirah, the Harvard Center for the Study for World Religions, and elsewhere, I bring a deep love of Torah together with successful experience at the highest levels of writing, editing, and publishing.

Looking to Build a Platform As a Rabbinic Writer and Thought Leader?

As an agented writer and a member of the National Book Critics Circle with publications in dozens of national and international journals, and a book under contract with a respected literary press, I can help you navigate every stage of publication and book development, from “I have some thoughts I’d like to publish, but I have no clue where to start,” to “I have a manuscript ready to submit, and I want feedback and strategy as I approach publishers.” I’ve supported many early-career poets and writers in successfully traversing the world of publishing, and am regularly in contact with editors at major publications. I would love to use my experience to support you in publishing your work, and help bring your Torah to a world that needs it.

Testimonials

“I’ve been blessed to work with Danny for years. He doesn’t just revise and polish: he’s an extraordinary thought partner — he knows the tradition deeply, has a poet’s ear for language, is a master educator, and possesses a compassionate heart adept at emotionally evocative and pastorally sensitive writing. He will help you form your ideas, asking questions that make everything click into place, and enable you to figure out what you actually want to say and how best to put it into words. I always come away from our work together knowing more than I did going in, and he has made me a better theologian, teacher, and preacher.”

— Rabbi Dr. Michael Rose Knopf, Senior Rabbi, Temple Beth El, Stamford, CT

“Danny has been an incredible thought partner, helping to sharpen my own thinking and asking me the right questions to get my writing to the best it could be. Every time I’ve workshopped something with Danny I felt like I arrived at a better version of whatever we were working through. Danny is immensely talented and understands the rabbinate in ways that many writing coaches don’t.”

— Rabbi Sarit Horwitz, Director of Rabbinic Leadership Programs, Shalom Hartman Institute of North America

“I’ve known Danny for more than a decade, and he’s been a trusted partner throughout my rabbinate. I’ve experienced firsthand the way he sharpens ideas and helps people find greater clarity in their thinking. Danny is exceptionally smart, intellectually curious, and asks the kinds of questions that make your work stronger. He brings the rare combination of deep fluency in Jewish life and enough distance to ask the questions insiders often overlook. That balance of insider knowledge and outsider perspective is invaluable for any rabbi seeking a more authentic and compelling voice.”

— Rabbi Dan Kaiman, Principal Rabbi and CEO, Congregation B’nai Emunah, Tulsa, OK
